The road out of Marrakech climbs for two hours, then does not come back down for a week.
This is the route we have run longest, and the one we have changed least. It goes over the Tichka pass, down the Ounila valley behind Aït Benhaddou, and follows the Draa until the palms give out. From Zagora the tarmac ends and you go the last four hours across open ground.
Three nights are in the erg itself, at a camp we have used since 2013 and still visit unannounced. The return crosses the Iriqui lake bed to Foum Zguid, then Taroudant and the Tizi n'Test — a different road home, which matters more than people expect.
It suits people who are comfortable with long driving days and want the distance to be the point. It is not a good first choice if you are travelling with children under eight.

Riad Zitoun
Eight rooms off a courtyard in the old medina, four minutes from the square on foot.
Nights 5 & 7
Chigaga camp
Twelve tents, proper beds, one long table. No generator after ten, which is the whole point.
