Eleven of us in one office

Eleven of us in one office

Eleven, since 2011

Six plan, five are on the road

We started because the trips we were sold never matched the country we knew.

We started because the trips we were sold never matched the country we knew.

In 2011 two of us drove the Draa in a borrowed car to check whether a route a client had booked was as described. It was not. We wrote it up, redrew it, and ran it again the following month with four people. That is still roughly the method.

Fifteen years later the list is sixty-two routes long and every one of them has been driven, walked or ridden end to end by someone in this office — most of them more than once, and all of them since the last time anything changed on the ground.

What that costs us is growth. What it buys you is a straight answer on the phone about whether a route is right for the month you are asking about — and, twice this year, the answer that it is not.

Two of us drove the Draa to check a route a client had already paid for. Half of it did not exist. We redrew it that week and ran it again the following month, and that became the job.

02 · How we work

Four rules

None of them are new, and all four cost us money at some point this year.

None of them are new, and all four cost us money at some point this year.

01

We go first

No route is sold before someone here has done it end to end, and none stays on the list longer than two years without being done again.

02

Eight is the ceiling

We have never run a group of nine. Past eight the guide stops being a guide and starts being a shepherd, and everyone can feel it.

03

The money stays

Houses, guides and drivers are paid direct and in full before you arrive. No commission is taken out of the room rate, ever.

04

We say no

About a third of what people ask us for, we turn down — usually because the timing is wrong, occasionally because the request is not ours to sell.

03 · Who you speak to

Our Expertise

Eleven of us, nine based in Morocco. The person who drafts your route is the person you call from it.

March

A film crew, four villages, one day

The villages are not a location and the people in them are not extras. The houses we work with said no first.

47°C at four in the afternoon is not a holiday, it is an endurance event. We hold that route from June to September.

October

Nine nights compressed into four

It is drivable and it is miserable. We sent the route notes over so they could judge it themselves, and wished them well.

If we say no we will tell you why, and where else to ask. Nobody here is paid on commission, so there is nothing in it for us either way.

How a trip is built

Four rules we have not broken since 2011. They are the reason we turn work away.

One route at a time

We hold sixty-two routes and refuse the rest. Each one is walked by us first, then rebuilt around your dates — same houses, same guides, honest driving times.

6 · Before you ask

The six questions

Asked in almost every first email. Anything not here, the phone is answered in Marrakech.

How far ahead should we book?

Four to six months for anything between October and March. The two perfect weeks in late October are usually gone a year out. If you are asking about next month, ask anyway — we hold two places on most guided departures until three weeks before.

Are the dates fixed?

What if a pass closes while we are out there?

Do you take people travelling alone?

How far ahead should we book?

How are the houses and guides paid?

Still unanswered

Ask the person who wrote the route.

No call centre and no bot. Six of us answer, and whoever replies is the one who has slept in the room.
